Support for Journal clubs now available on Turas Learn

Monday, 20 April, 2026

New, practical resources are now available to help health and social care staff start or run journal clubs. Journal clubs are a great way to bring colleagues together to explore research that’s directly relevant to everyday practice. They create a relaxed, supportive space to share ideas, build confidence in reading research and talk through how evidence can be used in real-life settings.

They’re also a smart way to support your continuous professional learning and development. Whether you’re setting up a club or taking part in one, journal clubs give you regular learning activity to reflect on and record

Support to get started - and keep going

The new resources are designed to help health and social care staff across Scotland run journal clubs with confidence. They’re suitable if you’re completely new to journal clubs or want to refresh an existing group.

With busy workloads and limited time, having clear, practical guidance can make things much easier. The resources are flexible and can be adapted for different teams, settings and professional roles across healthcare, social care and social work.

What's included?

The Journal club resources on Finding and using knowledge cover the whole journey - from getting started to keeping people engaged over time. They include:

  • Practical tips on setting up and running a journal club
  • Ideas for choosing and accessing useful reading
  • Guidance on structuring discussions and encouraging everyone to take part
  • Support for developing critical reading and reflective skills
  • Suggestions for turning evidence into action in practice

All content has been developed by experienced Librarians and researchers, drawing on their expertise in information skills, knowledge mobilisation and supporting professional learning.

Working with Library and Knowledge Services

Librarians play a key role in helping staff find, assess and use high quality evidence to support practice and decision making. These resources highlight how Librarians can support education, service improvement and professional development - not just by finding information, but by helping teams learn together.

Some teams may already work closely with their local Knowledge Services, while others may discover new opportunities to collaborate through these materials. Find details of your local service: Local Library Services | The Knowledge Network

By talking together about evidence that matters, journal clubs can help you stay up to date, strengthen research skills and clearly demonstrate ongoing learning.

Take a look, share with colleagues, and see how a journal club could support your learning and evidence informed practice.
